Acting School or Theatre Groups? We’d say both have their pros and cons. It depends on many factors, including your goals, preferences, and level of experience.
If you are new to acting and are simply looking to gain some experience and have some fun, then a theatre group may be the better option for you. You’ll learn the basics of acting while being able to perform in various productions.
But for an actor, belonging to a theatre group is just as important as, if not more so. Running a theatre group in the real world is where the action really happens. The demands and expectations of the real world are also brought to the performer. One only becomes aware of the genuine difficulties and learns how to deal with them after participating in a theatre group. As most ensembles operate on a tight budget, one person frequently caters to many sections or departments, so one learns how to multitask. It also encourages you to connect with a group of people and feel a team spirit like no other, and it provides you the chance to engage with real audience members.
However, as theatre groups obviously aim to present engaging performances to their audience, good parts typically go to skilled/experienced performers. Additionally, the director tends to cast performers who won’t require them to put in a lot of extra effort because they are already overworked and under pressure from the audience’s judgement. In addition to the director typically not having enough time to work diligently on every part of the performers with little roles, this apparently leaves little for the newer actors.
What about theatre groups? The main benefit of joining a theatre group is that you’ll gain performance experience. This is essential for any actor, as it allows you to hone your craft and develop your stage presence. In addition, being part of a theatre group can be great fun! You’ll make new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
So, which should you choose? It really depends on your goals and preferences. A theatre group may be the better option if you’re just starting out. However, if you’re serious about acting as a profession, then an acting school is the way to go. Whichever you choose, make sure you put your all into it and enjoy the experience!
